Casa de Siesta is a Bed and Breakfast with special and unique architecture: Having just been completed in January 2000 our facilities are built with the latest materials, but in keeping with some of the old traditions, as to styling and architecture.  We would like to show you some of the unique aspects of the architecture, furnishings, and artifacts of the rooms: All the building materials and décor of Casa de Siesta are representative of Mexican, North American and Anglo cultures of the Southwest: The basic building is of cement block, rather than adobe (which would be the material of choice in the "old southwest") due to the fact that we are in a Hurricane area and the Island would flood would such an occurrence happen. We did use plaster on the inside and outside, rather than use wallboard, tape, texture and or stucco.

The rooms are configured around a courtyard, which historically provided protected open space & was the location of the community well. Our "well" is a fountain made in Mexico out of a volcanic stone called "cantera". The fountain is hand carved from large blocks of this stone. As you will notice all the poles in the portals are carved spruce ponderosa pine from New Mexico and hand carved in Albuquerque New Mexico. We then had them trucked to the island for installation. The doors are all 8'  in height with an arched top.   In fact, all the room openings are arched, as they would have been in the "Old southwest". Each room has a "rosette" (Click here for Picture)style window with hand made stained glass. Each window weighs in at 2000 pounds and is made of molded concrete. These windows made in Tucson, Arizona, from a firm that makes replica architectural products. Also the "canalles around the roof come from the same company: The ceilings in your rooms are also of Indigenous Architectural style. The log beams are called Vigas, while the wood between the logs is called "Latillas" The Vigas and Latellas are all Ponderosa pine from New Mexico.

The clay floor tiles, and hand painted bathroom tiles are all from Mexico. The manufacturing process has changed little from the way they were first made. The clay floor tiles are call "Saltillo" tiles and are from Saltillo, Mexico. The bathroom tiles are called talavera tiles, and along with the sinks, are all hand made and painted in Dolores Hidalgo, Mexico.

For the enjoyment of our guests we have a swimming pool and a separate private courtyard. We are located just one block from the beach, and 1 block from the bay. We are convenient to all restaurants, charter fishing, or fishing off the several piers in the area. We are only 25 miles from Matamoros, Mexico and with the new bridge the are few delays getting to or from that city: We feature a beautiful dinning room where our guests can enjoy their complementary continental breakfast. We hope to create a quiet adult retreat, therefore we do not accept children under 12 years of age. The rooms have either 1 king bed or two standard size beds. All rooms have showers, refrigerators, and TV. There are phones in the rooms, for guests to use.
